Stores rarely go down because of a bad product. They go down because nobody prepared for peak traffic. If you run an OpenCart shop, it is better to meet November with a plan. Here is a sequence you can spread over a few weeks.
1. Check whether the site can take the load
A sale brings several times more visits in a short time. Look at your current hosting plan and its CPU and memory limits. Turn on caching, compress images and disable modules you do not use. If the site is slow already, read how to speed up your website, and for plan selection see our article on hosting.
2. Prepare promotions in advance
In OpenCart every product has Discount and Special tabs with start and end dates. Schedule prices for all sale days ahead of time instead of typing them at night on the launch day. Check coupons separately: usage limits, expiry and whether they stack with already reduced prices. One forgotten checkbox can turn a discount into a loss.
3. Walk the customer path yourself
Place a test order from your phone: search, cart, payment, confirmation email. Test every payment and delivery method. A common problem is a payment module that works in test mode and throws an error on a live order, and you hear about it from a customer.
4. Clean up your stock
A product that is out of stock but can still be bought causes complaints and refunds. Reconcile quantities, mark items that are running low, and decide in advance what to display at zero stock.
5. Set up analytics and messages
Make sure goals and events are tracked correctly, otherwise after the sale you will not know what worked. Prepare emails or messages for people who abandoned their carts. For general planning principles, see the article about building an online store.
6. Plan support and delivery
Decide who answers chat and phone during the peak days and how many orders your warehouse can really pack per day. An honest delivery time beats a pretty promise.
Frequently asked questions
How early should preparation start?
Ideally 4-6 weeks ahead: that is enough for the technical work as well as banners and mailings.
Do I need a separate developer?
If you do not work with code and server settings yourself, arrange help with a specialist in advance. For example, websites and their maintenance are handled by SiteMan.az.
