Many photographers own a DSLR that works perfectly and hear from every side that it is time to change systems. Switching can indeed improve your work, but not always right away and not for free. Here is what to weigh.
What really changes
- The viewfinder. An electronic one replaces the optical one and shows the image with settings already applied. Some find it convenient, some find it unfamiliar, so hold the camera in your hands first.
- Autofocus. Modern mirrorless cameras usually track faces, eyes and moving subjects better.
- Stabilization. In many models it is built into the body and works with any lens.
- Size and battery. Bodies are often more compact, but batteries drain faster, so you will need more spares.
Adapters and lenses
All major manufacturers make adapters that let you use your old lenses on new bodies. They usually work well, but some functions, such as autofocus speed, may be limited. Native lenses give the best result but cost a lot. A reasonable strategy is to start with an adapter and replace the most important lenses gradually.

- Flashes and triggers: check compatibility with your lighting system.
